She reportedly said, “I hear you’ve been dead drunk in every gutter in town, and it has to stop.” He famously replied, “I can’t stop. I’ve got a few more to go.”

His problems intensified in 2002 when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and the drug known as the “date rape” substance.

Shortly after, he entered rehab and, following his doctor’s advice, began spending hours in a hyperbaric chamber — typically used for divers—to help repair the brain damage caused by his substance abuse.

In a September 2017 interview, the public figure revealed that he drank “on and off” until a few years earlier before finally quitting. He explained, “Now I can have a drink and stop, but I used to fill the gaps between adrenaline rushes with booze and drugs.”

Fast forward to a December 2022 interview, the veteran star was asked if he was still off alcohol. He responded, “No. I stopped drinking rather abruptly, and I didn’t even have to fight it. Drinking and smoking just all went away about three or four years ago.”

During his recovery, Nick Nolte faced more setbacks. While he was away on location, his Malibu home was destroyed by a wildfire — the second house he lost to such fires.

“You feel helpless,” he shared in a November 2018 interview. “I lost all my scripts, the preparation, the clothes from every film I’d ever done. But everybody’s safe. You just have to start over.”

Despite the loss, he had no plans to retire. “I don’t understand retirement. I just don’t know what I’d do with myself,” he stated. The seasoned star noted that he would keep at it until it no longer made sense, adding that learning lines and getting into new situations is what he believes keeps his brain active.

As for his roles, Nolte has a fascination with playing homeless characters due to the depth and range these roles offer. For “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” he even spent time on the streets and attempted to access homeless shelters to immerse himself in the character, an experience that quickly gave him a sense of the role.

When asked about his method for “Rittenhouse Square,” he reflected on his earlier role in “Down and Out in Beverly Hills.” For the 1986 film, director Paul Mazursky had the film star live on the streets for about three days to understand the reality of homelessness.

This time, with “Rittenhouse Square,” director Brandon Eric Kamin saw Nolte build upon that earlier experience, allowing him to deepen the character with the knowledge he had already gained.

Apart from making an effort to perfect a character, the Nebraska native reportedly feels Hollywood has changed so much that he hardly recognizes it. Since his last studio film, “Angel Has Fallen” in 2019, and voicing Kuiil in “The Mandalorian,” he has shifted to working primarily on independent films, where he now feels completely at ease.

His last public appearance was at the world premiere of “Rittenhouse Square” in 2022. The “Hulk” star, now 83, has been divorced three times and once faced a palimony suit.

Nolte is a proud father of two: his son, Brawley Nolte, born in June 1986, and his daughter, Sophia Nolte, born in October 2007. In a 2015 interview, he reflected on fatherhood, saying that committing to having a child and the responsibility that comes with it was a difficult decision.
