Elon Musk’s DOGE Reportedly Uncovers $4.7 Trillion in Treasury Payments With Missing Code, Making Them ‘Almost Impossible’ to Trace

Elon Musk’s DOGE Uncovers $4.7 Trillion in Untraceable Treasury Payments

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has made a shocking claim, revealing that $4.7 trillion in treasury payments lacked proper tracking due to missing identification codes.

The Findings

On February 17, DOGE posted on Twitter, explaining that a crucial flaw in federal payment tracking had made it nearly impossible to trace trillions of dollars in government spending.

The issue centered around the Treasury Access Symbol (TAS)—a code used to link payments to specific budget items. DOGE explained:

“In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible.”

The White House has recently said Musk isn’t actually an employee of DOGE (Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

They announced that, as of Saturday, TAS codes are now required, ensuring greater transparency in government spending.

DOGE credited the U.S. Treasury for its cooperation in implementing the change.

Musk’s Response

Musk praised the update on Twitter, calling it a “major improvement in Treasury payment integrity.”

He added:

“This was a combined effort of [DOGE, Treasury, and the Federal Reserve]. Nice work by all.”

Musk’s Role in the Government

Musk has been a prominent figure in Donald Trump’s administration, particularly after the former president returned to office last month. In December, Trump announced that Musk would help lead DOGE alongside Vivek Ramaswamy.

However, since Ramaswamy’s departure, Trump has repeatedly referred to Musk as the sole leader of the department.

Despite this, the White House recently clarified that Musk is not a formal government employee and does not have direct decision-making power.

A court filing stated:

“Like other senior White House advisors, Mr. Musk has no actual or formal authority to make government decisions himself. He serves only as an advisor to the president and relays directives.”

Joshua Fischer, Director of the White House Office of Administration, further confirmed that Musk holds the title of ‘non-career special government employee’ and serves only as a senior advisor to Trump.
