After Suffering ‘criticism’ For Vitiligo, This Girl Transformed Her Body Into Incredible Works Of Art.
Ash Soto: Turning Vitiligo into a Celebration of Art and Self-Love. Ash Soto was diagnosed with vitiligo at age 12, a condition that causes loss of skin pigment and creates white patches on the body. As her condition worsened during her teenage years, she faced bullying and shame — even being asked if she had showered with bleach.
This led to depression, anxiety, and deep insecurity. But Ash decided to take control of her story. She began challenging herself with small acts of courage, like going out in public without covering her skin. Over time, she learned to embrace her vitiligo — and eventually turned it into art.
“I never realized how beautiful my vitiligo was until I traced it with a black marker,” she said. The outlines resembled a world map, and soon Ash began creating stunning body art, including pieces inspired by famous works like Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
Initially hiding her condition on social media, she later found the strength to post a photo showing her vitiligo — and the support she received was overwhelming. People from around the world reached out with their own stories, inspiring her to continue spreading a message of body positivity and self-love.
Now 21, Ash is proud of her skin and determined to raise awareness about vitiligo. “What others saw as imperfections, I turned into something beautiful,” she says. “The only person who has to love you is you. Self-love is the best love.”
