Shelby was known as a promising talent at Buchanan High School. She was dedicated to her sports, but also took into account her studies and relationships.

For her it was important to win and enjoy the process, the development and the fun together with her teammates.

This endeared her to her peers and the coaches who had the privilege of mentoring her. Her boundless energy, positive attitude and determined perseverance were an inspiration to all around her.

Athletic Highlights

During high school, Shelby grew as an athlete, setting several school records and attracting the attention of colleges.

She rose to prominence with her unmatched speed in the 200 meters and cemented her name by winning the title at the 2019 California State Meet, cementing her position as one of the best athletes of her generation.

The win helped secure the team championship for Buchanan High and achieve a personal milestone.

Shelby was impressive and really stood out for her attitude and dedication. Coach Brian Weaver, who guided Shelby from the beginning, saw her as an exceptional athlete and constant motivator for others.

“He praised Shelby as the ideal young athlete because of her work ethic, determination and inspiring leadership that was always focused on the success of her team.”

Weaver shared a touching memory from the 2019 state championships, where Shelby said she was tired and stiff after a long weekend of intense racing.

Despite fatigue, Shelby managed to achieve her best times, thanks to her determination and drive for improvement, which made her unique.

Student-Athlete

After high school, Shelby continued her athletic career at California Polytechnic State University, where she was admired as one of the team’s top athletes.

For five years she was a driving force within the team because of her impressive sporting achievements, inspiring leadership and example for her fellow athletes.

“Shelby combined her busy athletic life with a tough academic career, working hard day and night to achieve her goals. Her dedication and commitment earned her a lot of respect from both her teammates and teachers. Shelby was an inspiration to everyone around her.”

Shelby earned her Masters in Agriculture in 2024 through her dedication to academic success. Her passion for nature and drive for positive impact led her to this degree.

Her commitment to sustainability and agriculture demonstrates her diversity and determination to continue to develop.

The Cal Poly team was moved by Shelby’s departure in September 2024 and posted a tribute on Instagram to express their deep appreciation and tribute to her contributions.

“Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed in the Cal Poly community,” read the statement, which was delivered with a mix of sentiments in tribute to her extraordinary personality and impact on the university.

Her teammates, coaches and teachers all felt she had left a lasting impression, both through her performance and her personality.

Shelby’s Departure

In September 2024, Shelby left just months after completing her master’s degree, sparking reflection in the sports community and beyond.

People who knew her described her as kind, warm and always there for others, no matter how busy her own life was. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Her passing left a huge void in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Buchanan High School took to Facebook to share their feelings and memories about the departure of a former student, expressing their pride and appreciation for his achievements and character.

They remembered not only her remarkable athletic achievements and continued support of the athletic program during her studies, but also how she continued to provide that support after graduation.

“She was always willing to come back and help the younger athletes,” they wrote, remembering how her smile and kindness always cheered them up and motivated them to do their best. We will never forget these special qualities of hers, and her positive influence on our lives will live on in our hearts forever.
