19 Black Families Purchase 97 Acres in Georgia to Build Their Own Town
Georgia — In a bold move aimed at fostering self-sufficiency, safety, and generational wealth, a group of 19 Black families has purchased nearly 100 acres of land in rural Georgia with plans to build a new, self-sustained town from the ground up.
The land acquisition, totaling 97 acres, marks a significant step toward reclaiming space and building community-owned infrastructure in response to centuries of systemic inequities. The initiative is being led by a collective of families and visionaries who aim to create a safe haven rooted in Black excellence, economic empowerment, and unity.
“This is about creating a legacy. A space where we can live without fear, where our children can be safe, and where we control the narrative,” said one of the founding members of the group.
The project, widely praised on social media, has drawn comparisons to historic efforts like the development of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But this modern undertaking reflects a new wave of community-driven development fueled by social consciousness, grassroots organizing, and cooperative economics.
The group envisions building homes, farms, and community centers on the land. Long-term plans may also include educational facilities, marketplaces, and other infrastructure to support sustainable living.
